Firebush (Hamelia patens)
• Florida Native Wildlife Magnet: A fast-growing Florida native shrub prized for its nearly continuous clusters of tubular orange-red flowers that bloom from late spring through the first frost.
• Hummingbird & Butterfly Favorite: The nectar-rich blooms are a top draw for hummingbirds, zebra longwing, and gulf fritillary butterflies, while the small dark berries that follow feed songbirds.
• Big, Bold Presence: Left unpruned, Firebush can reach up to 15 feet in South Florida, though it is easily maintained as a tidy 5-8 foot shrub with occasional trimming.
• Tough & Low-Maintenance: Once established, this heat- and drought-tolerant native shrub is moderately salt tolerant and thrives with minimal care.
• Versatile Landscape Use: Ideal as a specimen, informal hedge, foundation planting, or centerpiece of a pollinator and wildlife garden.
• Sun & Water: Performs best in full sun but tolerates partial shade; average water needs while establishing, drought tolerant afterward.
• Cold Weather Note: Hardy in USDA zones 8-11; may die back in a hard freeze but typically resprouts vigorously from the roots in spring.
