The Exceptional Series is where Rare Character puts the single barrels Pablo Moix calls exceptional — every one at least nine years old — and E-WB is a wheated bourbon from it, bottled uncut at 127.68 proof. Whisky Advocate calls Rare Character America's hottest whiskey company: Moix, a twenty-year vintage-spirits buyer, and Peter Nevenglosky founded it in Louisville in 2021, sourcing from Wild Turkey, Willett, Bardstown Bourbon Company, and brokers, sealing every bottle in colored wax; the Exceptional Series is the single-barrel tier above the standard picks, bourbon, wheated bourbon, and Kentucky malt, nine years minimum. E-WB is a single barrel of nine-plus-year wheated Kentucky straight bourbon at barrel strength, 127.68 proof; check your bottle for the barrel code. The house notes: brown sugar, vanilla custard, and warm baking spice on the nose; toasted oak, caramelized maple, and ripe stone fruit on a silky, full palate; and a lingering finish of dried cherry, soft tannin, and white pepper. Amongst the Whiskey's review of an Exceptional Series bourbon barrel found the tier living up to the name. Honest note: nine-year wheated bourbon at 127 proof from a single barrel is the kind of thing Weller Full Proof hunters dream about — for the wheater collector and the drinker who wants Moix's pick at full strength.
